Westside is the first high school in the state of Nebraska to form a girls lacrosse team.
Jan. 23 was the first official practice at the Westside Community Center gym. Team manager, Annette McGuire, has been organizing team workouts and conditioning schedules to prepare the players for the upcoming season.
Coaches Carly Preston, Linda Lam, and Kelly Gorski have all played 4 years of collegiate lacrosse. Preston played for Creighton University, Lam for the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, and Gorski for Loyola University in Chicago.
“Were very fortunate to have these coaches. They definitely know what they’re doing,” said McGuire.
Since only a few players have previous experience, the coaches are focusing on basic skills and hope to get as many girls to join as possible.
“We try to recruit girls every chance we get. We definitely try to emphasize the fact that were the first school-sponsored girls team in the state,” said sophomore KayLee Greenwell.
The Greater Omaha Lacrosse Team used to be the only team in Omaha that girls could compete on. Westside is the first team to join the trend and more schools will hopefully follow suit.
