Halfway through the 2012-2013 wrestling season, Westside has seen much improvement, but their first major test came on Jan. 11 and 12 at the Metro Wrestling Tournament.
Out of the 16 teams in the Metro area, Westside placed 12th with 50 points overall.
Individually, Erick Vargas finished 2nd in weight class 126, Logan Moran finished 6th in weight class 160, Brady Novak finished 7th in weight class 170, Ismail Hamze placed 8th in weight class 185 and Brody Tangeman placed 8th in weight class 220.
With the State Wrestling tournament less than a month away, the wrestlers are preparing for their final test.
“Throughout the rest of the season, we will continue to do a lot of running and practice with intensity to help us prepare for districts and state,” says senior wrestler Erick Vargas.
The teams next major test will be districts at Papillion La-Vista High School on Feb. 9. This will determine which members of the team will qualify for state.
“As a team, we have the potential to do great things and could have many state qualifiers. All it takes is one move to win a match,” Vargas says.
The state tournament takes place at the Century Link Center Feb. 14 through 16.
