With the fall sports season coming to a close, here is how our school performed.
Girls golf won two tournaments and qualified for state. They ended up placing 7th in the state tournament, only one shot away from placing 6th. Coach Berry Glanzer had expectations for the team to compete hard all year and he believes they did a nice job with consistency.
“Our team goal was to make it to the state tournament and do well and we did that,” said Glanzer.
Senior Erin Hodges and Junior Clair Selby both did well individually. Hodges placed 15th at state and won a medal while Selby shot well for her first year at state placing 38th.
The varsity volleyball team finished 17-19. The team finished in the top four at the Bellevue tournament and they won the Lincoln High/Millard South tournament.
“I think we all had a little bit higher expectations. Some of our goals were to finish with a winning record and unfortunately we didn’t. Also we wanted to make it to state and we didn’t. But aside from those two goals they definitely lived up to my expectations,” said head coach Kim Eymann
Girls cross country had a very good season. Varsity made it to state placing 8th. Junior Katie Thull got 22nd and senior Molly Novoa placed 16th and set a new school record.
“Going into the season I wasn’t really quite sure how it would go. We had a lot of seniors that left last year so it was kind of a younger team. But they definitely lived up to my expectations. They just came in ready to go, ” said coach Theresa Gosnell.
Boys cross country placed sixth out of seven total teams at districts. The team did well this year despite having a few setbacks.
“Although I was the only person who qualified for state this year, I think next year the team will have a great shot at making it to state as individuals and as a team,” said senior Andrew McVea.
Varsity tennis preformed well in both the regular season and end of season tournament. Their final ranking in state was fourth.
“I expected the team to be competitive and be in the top five. As the season went on, we continued to improve and be more competitive with the top teams, ” said head coach Kim Gradoville.
Trent Gardner placed second in state at #1 singles with two upset wins. Sean Padios placed third at #2 singles with one upset win and seniors Michael Mellen and Noah Placzek placed fourth at #1 doubles.
“Everyone continued to improve and help the team however they could. No one was satisfied with his current level and continued to work for more,” said Gradoville.
The varsity football team won our district and made the playoffs however they lost the first game against Omaha Burke.
“The senior class over achieved and they worked hard for the results. We were disappointed at the end not to go further into the playoffs but when you look back we had a very successful season, ” said head coach Brett Froendt.
This was the first time for many of the seniors on the team to be playing on varsity but they all stepped up to the plate and took charge to lead the team to the playoffs.
The varsity softball team finished 13-13 overall and finished second at districts. The team was one game short of qualifying for the state tournament.
“We did not meet our goal of state but we did finish second at districts which means that in the 16 years that I have been coaching at Westside we have finished first or second at districts, ” said coach Kevin Dunn.
The teams final ranking in the state was 9th in class A. Senior Allie Ladd was the teams leading pitcher and leading hitter. Kat Matuska and Allie ladd were fielding leaders and Allie Ladd and Morgan Teuscher were named Honorable Mention All-State.
“Im proud of the fact that we finished as high as we did at districts. We beat Grand Island twice this year and we were the only team to do that,” said Dunn.
