Skyping Abroad

The Spanish 4 Honors teachers have always tried to enrich their students with different learning activities. On February 28th, Spanish 4 will take a different approach to learning hold a Skype session with Latin Grammy nominee Tamela Hedström.

“I came in contact with her via Facebook.  I sent her a message asking if she would like to speak our students and she readily agreed,” said Spanish 4 Honors teacher John White.

The classes have spent the past few days preparing for their Skype call with Hedström. They are learning more about her by reading her biography and also learning about her ideas and history in the music industry.

“She collaborates with a whole bunch of people in the music world and has been nominated for a Latin Grammy. She has done concerts in Costa Rica and Mexico,” said White.

Students are also excited about Skyping with Hedström.

“I think it is a cool opportunity to use Spanish outside of the classroom,” said Spanish 4 Honors student Camden Bilyeu.

The Spanish 4 Honors teachers are expecting to accomplish a few things from this activity.

“I want students to learn about a personality in the Latin America World,” said White, “But I also want them to use their spanish in a real life situation. I want them to hear what she says and produce a response from what they hear. Because that is what they do in English.”

The Skype session is being held in the Little Theater on February 28th, mods 4-7. Although it is closed off to students not in Spanish 4 Honors, White does not mind if you join them as long as you are in a Spanish class and are respectful.
