The large banner hanging in the landing is a new addition this year and will be annually updated for years to come. The banner represents the NSAA “Cup”, which recognizes statewide activities and athletics. It gives an overall score to each school based on how many NSAA activities placed in the top eight in their class. For each placement in the top eight, the school is awarded points starting at 50 points for first place and decreasing to 15 points for eighth place. At the end of the year, the points are totaled for each school and a champion will be chosen.
The difference between the NSAA “Cup” and the Omaha World Herald “All-Sports” champion is that the Cup includes state sanctioned activities such as journalism and music, as well as sports.
“What we wanted to do is put something in our school that every person involved in an NSAA group can be proud of,” said athletic director Tom Kerkman.
The landing was chosen as the prime spot for the new banner instead of the main entrance because a greater number of students will see it instead of mainly parents and school visitors.
“We have a lot of good students here that do a variety of different things and this way they can all be recognized,” said Kerkman.
