An assignment in Senior Augusta Thacker’s graphic design class led her to compete in a national contest The students in Westside’s graphic design class were given a week to create a design to be used in the Doodle4Google contest. The students sent in their artwork to be evaluated. The winner would be featured on the homepage of Google for a day, win a $50,000 technology grant and a $30,000 scholarship.

Thacker won the state contest and is now competing against students from each state in the national contest. The winner will be partially chosen by public voting. May 9 the voting polls will close to the public, and the top five finalists will be revealed.  From there a panel of judges picks the winner. Each state finalist and a parent will be flown to Google headquarters, in San Francisco on May 21, for the awards celebration. At the celebration the 5 finalists will be named and a winner will be chosen.

“I think I am still in shock about being a state winner,” Thacker said. “I am not sure what I would do if I was the national winner! I would love to win the scholarship and the grant, but I am honestly just really happy about being a finalist. There are so many great designs. I am super excited to be going to San Francisco and seeing Google Headquarters.”

This Friday, May 2, a representative from Google will be in the landing for the pep rally during homeroom. Then during first mod, Thacker will be presented an award in room 222 for winning the state contest.
