Fair-weather Fans

Fair-weather Fans

Face it. We all know the people who suddenly become die hard fans when a certain team is doing well. We shall call these people fair-weather fans. We will also tell them they might as well jump off the bandwagon because if you can’t handle a team at their worst they don’t deserve to celebrate when the team is at their best.

For instance, true Creighton basketball fans out there will remember that those final Dana Altman years (both before the whole Arkansas debacle and after) were not too pretty. Yet, you have those loyal fans who continued to pay for season tickets, show up to every game and even make the field trip to St. Louis come March.

Expectations were extremely low but true blue fans continued to show up and support their team.

Enter Greg McDermott. When the head coach made his way to Creighton, bringing his son Doug, and later Grant Gibbs along with him, there was a sudden spike in the number of Creighton fans.

Someone once told me, “a true fan should have his or her teams picked by the time they are five-years-old.” That is a tad extreme, especially if you aren’t coming from a sports dominated family. But the general concept holds true.

Moral of the story: don’t be that guy jumping from team-to-team trying to always have a winning team. Pick a team and stick with them. Through the ups and downs. I promise you the victories will be that much more rewarding if you stand by your team the entire time.
