Gay Marriage in Sociology

Every semester students in sociology have the chance to experience married life. For over a month they complete the “marriage project.”

For this project students choose anyone they wish to marry. They can choose a boyfriend or girlfriend, a best friend or even someone from another school. There is only one stipulation: they may not marry someone of the same sex.

“The sociology team every year reviews the rule on who can participate in the marriage project, and after discussing it each year we have decided that it is the best decision to not allow same sex couples,” said sociology instructor Adam Fjell.

He went on to explain the reasoning behind the decision.

“The state of Nebraska does not recognize same sex marriage, and as a state funded institution we feel it would be best to align our rules with the state law,” Fjell said.

Though many students have taken sociology, no one has ever had a serious issue with the ruling.

“I believe that [same sex marriage] should be allowed in sociology because ultimately it has no direct effect on me, so why not?” said sociology student senior Christine Burlingham.

As for the future, Fjell doesn’t know what will become of the rule.

“We have always come to the decision that the day Nebraka changes the law is the day we will allow it in the class,” Fjell said.
