New Hallway Decorations

Noticed anything new in the hallways recently?

IMG_6773As of now, 19 different photos line the walls of the main hallway from the journalism wing to the Social Studies IMC door. These photos were able to be displayed with the help of a grant from the Westside Foundation. The man behind the project, journalism teacher Rod Howe, plans to continue this project for many years.

“I’ve talked to the custodians and Mrs. Ricketts to figure out how we might rotate new photos in or whether we move older photos to another part of the building but we haven’t quite figured out how that will work yet,” says Howe.

In an email sent out to the entire student body reguarding the new hallway pictures Howe stated,  “I believe we have covered a good cross section of Westside life. We realize many sports, clubs, activites, academic areas, etc., are not yet represented. Be patient. We hope to make this an ongoing project for many years.” The photos that were chosen came from a couple of different classes. Most of them were chosen from yearbook and newspaper photographers and a few were taken from photojournalism students.

Along with these pictures you might have noticed the senior class pictures that are being hung up in the third floor hallway. These photos were made possible by math teacher Ben Baber. According to Baber, the senior class pictures had been framed each year but were just kept in a closet.

“I gave a few ideas to the administration about where they could be hung up, and we just decided on where they are now,” says Baber.

The only picture that was not framed was the one from the class of 1998. Baber used the senior class money to have it framed and the building services staff agreed to hang each picture when they were able to fit it into their schedule.

Both of these projects are planning on being expanded throughout the years and they hope to bring some life to the otherwise plain hallways.
