Preview: Westside Boys Basketball Looks to Continue Early Winning Streak
The Warriors varsity boys basketball team will face off against a 3-2 Benson Bunnies team this Friday, Dec. 18 while then going up against Lincoln Southeast the next day. The Warriors’ are currently 3-1 and looking to extend their two-game win streak after coming off a pair of wins last weekend against Omaha North and Norfolk. Warriors’ head coach Jim Simons had his team in practice this week work on what they do best to prepare them for their upcoming games.
“We are trying to improve upon things that will help us become a better team. [With] Benson we have a pretty good idea. They’ve played five games already so we can prepare a game plan for them. Lincoln Southeast and the rest of the Lincoln Public Schools, this will be their first weekend of games. The game against Southeast will be a game of focusing on ourselves and trying to do the things we do and do them better than last week,” Simons said.
This early in the season there is a lot of work to be done in order to have the team be at their best performance in the postseason.
“We look at each week as a way to get better and we see some areas of growth even with us getting the wins last weekend,” Simons said. “Defensively we want to continue to improve and guard the ball individually. Offensively we are continuing to improve our shooting and understand the difference between an average shot and a really good shot.”
Last weekend in both the Omaha North and Norfolk game there were some breakout performances. One that stood out was starting sophomore Tate Odvody who dropped a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds on Friday. He is looking to carry that momentum into this weekend.
“Trusting my teammates is the key. Just doing what the team needs me to do in order to get a win,” Odvody said.
As the team wants to continue their win-streak, they worked hard in practice this week to prepare themselves the best they can to get a win against Benson and Lincoln Southeast.
“We worked a lot on defense, and some actions the teams will run and how we can defend those. We have to trust that our offense will come if we play our style in both of these games,” Odvody said.
Friday’s matchup at Omaha Benson will start at 7:15 p.m. on Friday night. Saturday, the boys will head back home against Lincoln Southeast at 6:00 p.m. which will be live on our website.
