Senior Thomas Lundin placed first in the 50 meter freestyle last week.

On February 14 and 15, the Westside varsity swimming teams competed in the Metro Conference Meet. The boys varsity team came into the meet with an undefeated regular season record in duals and had placed first in the Westside Invitational. The girls came into the meet with only two regular season losses and have placed second in multiple tournaments. Prior to the meet, senior Samuel Kelly talked about what the teams needed to do to win the meet.

“We lack depth, last year we only had 6 guys score at state,” Kelly said. “If we have 8 or 12 guys score, we would be in a better position to win. The way the scoring works it comes down to whoever can take the most guys to state and historically Prep has always had more.”

The boys varsity team placed third overall with 305 points. They fell short to the Creighton Prep Jr. Jays that scored 375 points and Elkhorn/Elkhorn South that scored 312. These three teams were the only teams to score above 200. Senior Thomas Lundin placed first in the 50 meter freestyle with a time of 21:78. Sophomore Collin Davis also placed first in the 100 meter freestyle with a time of 47:26. Davis said that he had to be ready to compete with the best.

“I was focused and ready for this meet,” Davis said. “It’s that part of the season where you are just pumped because it’s the culmination of all of the hard training. My coaches and training the whole season really has gotten me better. I was really excited! It’s not an event that I don’t usually do good in. My stroke rate is looking a lot faster and a lot stronger.”

The girls’ varsity team placed fourth overall with 211 points. They lost to Marian who took first place with 510 points, Elkhorn/Elkhorn South took second with 394 points and Millard North took third with 286 points.

The teams will return to the pool for the final time this season on Friday, February 27 for the state meet.
