Westside Golf Qualifies for State Tournament
After finishing second at the district championship in Fremont last week, with Kolby Brown and Grant Jabenis tying for fifth place, and Jacob Hellman with an eighth place finish, the Warrior golf team is headed to state in Norfolk.
At the district tournament, the team finished with a 35-over par score with Jabenis and Brown finishing with a 7-over-par score. Coach Brett Froendt credited the stability of their performances,
“In Fremont, our consistency got us second place. It’s something we’ve been working on all year,” Froendt said.
Despite the relatively high scores from the team, they pushed through the competition and the tougher-than-normal course conditions.
“The scores of the team tend to ebb and flow with regards to the course difficulty,” Froendt said.
The team has been training to work with the Norfolk course, their hardest challenge yet, according to Froendt.
“It’s the most difficult course to play. They set the pins in extremely tough positions this year,” Froendt said. “Typically our guys don’t play too well in Norfolk, but we have three guys this year who have never seen it before.”
Westside is going into the event with the eighth overall ranking, but Froendt believes they can place higher.
“We expect to finish better, a top 5 finish would be great for us,” Froendt said.
To accomplish that, Froendt has a couple of pointers that the team is going to need to fix before the competition.
“We are going to need to improve our shots from the tee box, and make sure we don’t hit into the trees, the biggest key will be our drives,” Froendt said.
Westside will tee off from Norfolk on Tuesday morning.
