Student adjusts to move from New York

Calvin Hing 2After 15 years of living in one place, moving can be difficult, especially when you move 19 hours away from home. Sophomore Calvin Hing made that transition this year after moving from New York City to Omaha.

“I moved to Omaha from New York this year,” Hing said. “My family and I moved here because it’s cheaper than New York and we have family in Omaha.”

The biggest adjustment that Hing had to face when moving to Omaha was schooling.

“The high school that I went to freshman year in New York was really, really hard, way harder than Westside,” Hing said. “I went to Brooklyn Technical High School in New York City, New York.”

Brooklyn Tech specializes in engineering, math and science and is the largest high school for science, technology, engineering and mathematics in the United States. It is one of the top 50 high schools in the United States.

“The main thing was that New York was a big city with a lot more people in it than Omaha,” Hing said. “It is also a lot less diverse in Omaha, racially and just the way people think.”

Hing feels that the people of Westside have welcomed him, but he still misses New York.

“I feel like if I had stayed in New York I would have had better opportunities because its a harder school,” Hing said. “A lot of my friends that go to Brooklyn Tech are getting letters from colleges and having opportunities already because the school is so good.”
