PREVIEW: Baseball team looks to keep title streak rolling

Baseball photoAfter the unprecedented success of three straight state championships, the baseball team has their eyes set on title number four, to no ones surprise. To reach that goal, head coach Bob Greco knows the focus needs to be on this year, and not the past three.

“I always just think about what’s going to happen and I probably think too far ahead and don’t look at what’s happening today, but I never look behind” Greco said. “It’s great that we won but who cares for this year?”

Coming into this year, the team lost over half of its starters. While this is normal for most high school teams each year, what is hurting the team right now is the lack of pitchers. Last year the team had a slew of pitchers with a five man starting rotation going. This year, the team only returns two starting pitchers in junior Mitch Francis and senior Aiden Breedlove, so they’ll have to look to younger players to step up.

Although playing more underclassmen can hurt the team at the start of the season, Greco just sees it as part of the process.

“We don’t care about what happens early,” Greco said. “That’s where we’re going to learn and get better. Our goal is at the end.”

The main thing Greco wants to focus on during the season is senior leadership. He and the other coaches have been preaching this to the seniors throughout the offseason.

Having played varsity the past three years, senior Mitchell Hagan is one of the seniors Greco wants to lead. Hagan also believes seniors need to step up with leadership but a team isn’t just leaders.

“I think it’s not just the leaders but the followers too,” Hagan said. “They need to follow the leaders and believe in our team goals.”

Should the leadership come and underclassmen step up, the Warriors will be a contender for the state title once again.
