Swim team talent brings potential for State Championship

Boys

With a class of seniors gone and two returners injured, the swim team has to rebuild. Fortunately for them, the team last year had depth that’s returning this year

“I’m excited for the team,” head coach Doug Krecklow said. “We’ve got a lot of talent. It’s probably the most talent on both sides that we’ve had in several years.”

Returning for the boys are state qualifiers in junior Alex Bayles, seniors Nick Gross, Colin Oltman and Ben Kerby.

Kerby thinks the same, but one of the big things that could hinder the success is making sure everyone gets back into the rhythm early in the season.

“Right now the biggest challenge is just getting back into the swing of it and just starting to swim again,” Kerby said.

The biggest part of preparing for the season is water time according to Krecklow and Kerby. It takes as little as two days for a swimmer to feel out of shape, but Krecklow has been managing this with plenty of two a day practices and encouraging swimmers to swim out of season with a club team as well.

With the talent and experience back, the boys swim team is shaping up to have a great year.

Girls

On the girls front, the team lost seniors, but return state champion senior Elizabeth Amato-Hanner as well as state qualifying seniors Grace Porter and Samantha Baker.

Along with experienced returners, Krecklow is excited for the freshman class and the talent they bring.

“On both sides, girls and boys, we have a really good group of freshman, and  typically freshmen girls can compete really well, even with seniors.” Krecklow said.

The key for the girls is to consistently be mentally focused for meets, and Krecklow believes there’s nothing stopping the team from winning the state championship.
