Get to know American Government President: Jackson Frerichs
Every year the American Government class holds an election and students have the choice to run for elected positions including: congress members, president and vice president. A voting simulation done by the students yields results for the new leader. This year’s presidential campaign winner is Jackson Frerichs.
Q: How does it feel to be president?
A: “It feels great that my constitutes place this trust in me.”
Q: Were you confident in your campaign?
A: “Yes to a certain extent. We felt like we had a really good strategy, but at the end of the day it all comes down to voter turn out.”
Q: Were you scared that you might not have won?
A: “Definitely. We thought the third party’s pizza party would take away more votes from us, but they ended up taking more votes from Stephanie.”
Q: How did you feel when you found out you won?
A: “I was happy. Proud.”
Q: What do you think helped you the most on your road to the election?
A: “Probably just talking to people like just asking them how they felt about things and then sort of making policies based off of what they wanted.”
Q: What was the most difficult part of your campaign?
A: “I’m not a great public speaker so that makes it hard. At the national convention I had to give an acceptance speech and it was just terrifying.”
Q: What was the most fun part about your campaign?
A: “Probably the debates, I really enjoy debating policy. Also just seeing people have fun at school was really fun.”
Q: What’s your next step going forward?
A: “So now we go into a model congress for the class and I just finalized my cabinet nominations so now I have to write three bills for each secretary and then we go lobby for those bills to get my agenda passed through congress.”
