Girls golf team heads to state tournament with driving ambition

The Westside High School girls golf team will be competing at the state golf tournament Monday and Tuesday Oct. 12 and 13 at Norfolk Country Club. The team is getting ready to do their best at the tournament.

“We’ve improved a lot since the past season, I believe that anything can happen in golf and that we have a good shot,” said head varsity girls golf coach Barry Glanzer.

Most of the past fifteen years the girls golf team has placed well enough to go to the state tournament. The team is hoping to score better than they had the previous year.

“Based off of how we’ve played [this year], we are estimated to place somewhere around fifth and eighth place,” team captain Claire Nelson said.

To qualify for state the team had to shoot a certain score at the Metro tournament last week. The team placed third out of sixteen teams. The Millard North golf team won the Metro tournament, which is a good sign for the Westside team since they have beaten Millard North twice in the past.

The team is positive about their performance. Players Claire Nelson, Lili Fogland, Lindsay McCormick and Julia Nelson are some of the key players to watch at the tournament.

“[I believe] we can place in the top five,” senior Lindsay McCormick said. “I know we have a good team. If we pull it together and play a good game, we can be great.”
