The Westside swim team’s season was concluded this weekend with the state swim meet in Lincoln, Feb. 28-Mar. 1. Competing in a field with 22 teams, including the Warriors, the Westside boys finished in 15th place, scoring 41 points; 410 points behind the winner Creighton Prep. The girls finished in fifth place with a final point total of 187. This total fell 143 points behind the first place finisher Lincoln Southwest (330).

For Westside, sophomore Elizabeth Amato-Hanner had another impressive performance after her record setting day at the Metro Conference Championship three weeks ago. Amato-Hanner took the gold medal in both the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke.

“It was really exciting,” Amato-Hanner said. “I was close to my goals and I was really happy with my times.”

Amato-Hanner was also pleased with how the group did as a whole.

“We did better than last year — the energy of the team was much better as a whole,” Amato-Hanner said.

Assistant swimming coach Nick Joslin commented on the rest of the team’s performance in the state meet, including the 21 Westside athletes that swam their best times in Lincoln.

“Points wise, the meet was very fast,” Joslin said. “It was the first time in forever the boys haven’t been top 10. It’s disappointing but you can’t be that mad when everyone is swimming best times.”
