Devin Stueck-Hughes

Senior Devin Stueck-Hughes will be attending Iowa Western next year on a baseball scholarship.

Sport: Baseball
College: Iowa Western (NJCAA Division I)

How did you pick baseball?

“My grandpa was a big role in sports. [Baseball] was all he showed me growing up. I was surrounded by baseball when I was younger.”

What led you to Iowa Western?

“I felt like there were more opportunities [at Iowa Western] after [school]. It is easier to get two extra years of working [on baseball] then choosing where to go [to school] rather than making a long-term four-year commitment [to a Division I school] right away.”

What are you most excited about for next year?

“The professionalism that comes with the work you put in. Since you’re being given money you have to do your best both on and off the field.”

How do you plan to balance academics with athletics?

“Use a lot of my free time outside of baseball to school and books.”

How much do you expect to play next year?

“[I hope] to play my freshman year in the outfield.”

Brock Howery

Sport: Baseball

College: Morningside College (NAIA)

How did you pick baseball?

“I guess you can say that it is in my blood. My mom and dad met playing on a coed softball team. I have tons of aunts, uncles and cousins that have played the game. I also have a cousin that played baseball for Hastings College.”

What led you to Morningside?

“I had sent Morningside’s coach Drent an email during the summer introducing myself to him. I let him know that I was playing during the summer for the Nebraska Sluggers and that I had made the Baseball Factory’s National Under Armour team. I also let him know that I would be playing in the 2013 Omaha National World Series. During the fall I had been offered scholarships from a couple of other schools and was actually really narrowing down my search, but then Morningside’s coach Drent had talked to my fall baseball coach, Johnny Graves, about me and got my contact information.”

What are you most excited about for next year?

“I am very excited at the possibility of having the opportunity to play right away at first base and hit in the middle of the line-up. The field we will play on is awesome. I have worked very hard during my high school years and have faced several road blocks. I have not let that phase me to reach my goal of playing collegiately.”

How do you plan to balance academics and athletics?

“I will need to stay focused on both. I plan to eventually go on to law school so I need to make sure to take my academics seriously. I think just managing my time will be key to being successful.”

How much do you expect to play in the upcoming years?

“I look forward to playing a lot. I intend to work very hard every day to be the best player and teammate that I can be.”
