With three starting wrestlers out to start out the week, the varsity wrestling team went into the Bellevue East duals and the Lincoln Pius dual with a tough path to winning. At the meets, though, Westside had some victories.

The duals at Bellevue East on Saturday had five other teams, and the Warriors started with North Platte, but ultimately lost 45-33. Next it faced Lincoln High School and after many individual wins, Lincoln came out with a narrow win, 36-31. In the next dual, the Warriors took on home team Bellevue East and again lost by a narrow margin, 37-31.

Fortunately, the Warriors were able to bounce back and knock off Lincoln Northeast 45-21 and then Bellevue West 45-23. After the last two duals the team finished 2-3 at the meet, but had nine wrestlers medal in their respective weight classes, with Dylan Sorrell and Josh Jansa winning their weight classes.

At the Lincoln Pius dual on Tuesday the Warriors fought hard, but couldn’t match Pius, and went down with a 42-36 loss.

Following the losses, head coach Mike Jernigan thinks the team can do better.

“We’re still not close to our number one lineup,” Jernigan said. “Our best wrestling is so far away right now, and that’s what we want. Our team philosophy is to continue to get better through the year.”

Though the team may not be at full strength, they are showing progress, and hope to bring home a win at the Wahoo invite this Saturday at 9 a.m.
