Westside vs. Millard South Preview
The No. 2 ranked Westside football team’s only victory by single digits this season was over Creighton Prep. Creighton Prep is also the only ranked opponent the Warriors have faced so far. The Warriors have managed to roll to a 5-0 season, averaging 37.6 points per game, while allowing only 8.8 points per game, but will face their second biggest challenge of the season tonight when they take on the No. 10 ranked Millard South Patriots.
Head coach Brett Froendt knows the game is important for the Warriors.
“[Millard South is] a big opponent,” Froendt said. “People underestimate them because they are 2-3, but they’re a pretty good football team with pretty good athletes. They are still ranked in the top 10 and they probably should be, because they’ve played a tough schedule, and hopefully our kids rise to the occasion, which they need to.”
Similar to the game against Creighton Prep, the Warriors face a team with a dual-threat quarterback. Senior Anthony Cloyd, a three year starter for the Patriots, is completing almost 54 percent of his passes, while averaging 110 yards per game. Cloyd is also averaging 57 yards rushing per game, and has scored four touchdowns on the ground.
Last week, in a 48-0 win against Omaha South, Cloyd was 6 of 10 for 162 yards and two touchdowns passing, while rushing for 31 yards and a score.
Froendt said the key of the game to the game is containing Cloyd. The Warrior defense matched up well against Easton Stick of Creighton Prep and Pierce Almond of Grand Island, two dual-threat quarterbacks, and even though the Millard South linemen have a size advantage over the Warrior linemen, Froendt thinks the Warriors line up well with the Patriots, too.
“I think we match up with their athletes pretty good — better than we have in prior years,” Froendt said. “And their line is certainly a whole lot bigger than ours, but that’s typically the case.”
In the game, the Warriors will be looking to extend their undefeated regular season, and move their district record to 2-0. Millard South will look to move their record to .500, after losses to two currently ranked opponents put a damper on their season. They are currently 1-0 in the district.
The Warriors will be without starting right guard senior Henry Dobson, who is out with a lower leg injury. Senior Tom Young will be moving from left tackle to right guard to fill in for Dobson. Junior Connor Flairty will step in at left tackle.
The game is at Millard South. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. The weather forecast is showing rain and temperatures in the 50s for the game.
