Westside vs. Central

Westside+vs.+Central

First games of the year are often ridden with mistakes for both teams, as they have been practicing all off-season without any game experience.Westside was not able to avoid the mistakes.

Westside had three touchdowns called back: a punt return touchdown, a kick return touchdown and one rushing touchdown.

“We have to go back and look at them on film,” said head coach Brett Froendt. “Guys just have to realize they have to be in the right position, before they make their blocks.  In both cases, that’s what happened.”

But, overall, for the first game of the year, the Warriors played well.  On their first drive of the game, senior Lane Yates, who finished the game with 91 yards and a touchdown on 25 attempts, carried the ball into the end zone for a five-yard touchdown run to put the warriors up 7-0.

Later on, with 6:09 left in the second quarter senior Drew Fitzmorris, who finished the game with two touchdowns and 39 yards on 10 rushing attempts, scored an 11-yard touchdown run.

With 5:17 left in the first half, Central got a first down, their first of the game. Later, with 48 seconds left in the first half, Central scored on a four-yard touchdown run, ending the second half with the Warriors up 14-7.

To start the second half, Fitzmorris returned the kickoff to the Central 39 yard line.  A short time later, he scored his second touchdown of the game, a seven-yard touchdown run with 9:34 left in the third quarter, putting Westside up 21-7.

After another stop by the Westside defense, Lane Yates returned a punt 54 yards for a touchdown. Unfortunately, the touchdown was called back.

Later in the game, the defense held Central on fourth and one at the Westside 49 yard line, with 2:52 left in the third quarter. The Warriors drove down the field, but senior Christian Hagan, who finished the game with 83 yards and one interception on 7-15 passing, missed a 55-yard field goal with 23 seconds left in the third.

Westside stopped Central again on a fourth down. On fourth and three from the Central 27 yard line, with 10:22 left in the game, the defense stopped Central to make it Warrior ball at the Central 29. Hagan missed another field goal, this time a 51-yard attempt, with 8:34 left in the game, leaving Westside with the same 21-7 lead.

With Central ball, fourth and two at the Central 28, senior Cody Cramer tackled the Central running back for a five-yard loss. Soon after, Hagan connected on a 38-yard field goal attempt, to put the Warriors up 24-7, the final score of the game.

Other than the mistakes, Froendt was pleased with the teams performance.

“Hey, first game, I’m happy,” Froendt said.  “There’s a lot of places we have to improve to play at that top level. We’ve got 8 games to figure that out. Next week we got a great opponent [Creighton Prep]. It’s going to be a tough football game so we will go back to work Sunday.”

The Warriors finished the game with 144 rushing yards and 83 passing yards. The defense held Central to 76 yards rushing and 66 yards passing.

The Warriors face Creighton Prep on Friday, Sept. 6, at Westside at 7 p.m.
