Originally from Millard West, Tre Savoie came to Westside at the start of his junior year not expecting much from last season but is having a solid season in his final year in the red and black. Last season was Savoie’s first year on varsity being the Warriors primary catcher and posting solid numbers hitting .236 with 11 RBI’s and playing 29 of the warriors 31 games. He also recorded the most outs on the team with 140 putouts which is nearly five outs recorded in a game he played.
This season has been a big continuation of last season for Savoie hitting .219 with lots of hard hit baseballs with 11 RBI’s which is tied for the most on the team and 78 putouts in the field. “I’m swinging the bat well.” Savoie said “it’s just that a lot of my swings are going right to guys, so trying to just not worry about too much and just stay in myself. And I know that if I just do that, then good things will happen.”
Westside is still looking for an identity on the offensive end averaging less than four runs a game going 9-15 in the process nearing districts. Even with the Warriors lackluster offense the pitching has been one of the best staffs in all of Class A leading Westside to only a single digit run differential deficit even with losing six more games than they won.
Savoie and the other catcher on the roster Nikola French have been a big part of that success pitching along with a pitching staff with four college commits and one of the best players in the class of 2027 in Markus Chandler. “They just find their spots really well,” Savoie said. “They fill up the zone, which is huge, and have a lot of command on the off speed too, So I mean it’s all I can ask for them.”
Savoie is committed to play at the next level at Paradise Valley Community College in Phoenix, Arizona. The Pumas are ranked 22nd in the latest NJCAA polls and have sent five players to the pros. “They’re a really competitive squad. We’re actually in the national rankings right now.” Savoie said “It’s going to be a place where you go and develop and then hopefully see a couple of division one offers afterwards. The coaching staff is awesome. So super excited.”
Savoie and the Warriors don’t have much longer left in the season, they have one home game and one away game then it will be time for postseason baseball with the first round of districts. Westside lost in the district finals last year so time will tell if they can have one final push left in them before their season comes to an end “ I want my hitting stats to end up a little bit better, so you keep trying to hit the ball hard hopefully find some gaps and score some runs for our guys.” Savoie said “but now I think we have a good chance of making the state championship if we can get the ball in the gaps.”
The Warriors next game is their senior night game at home against Lincoln North Star and they will finish the season on the road playing Westview looking to get a couple of wins going into districts.
