The Westside girls swim team kicked off their season this past Thursday with a win against Westview. A few days later was the Burke invite and the Warriors had a close race with Marian only losing by 24 points. The girls dive team also did well at the Burke invite. The diving part of the meet was on the Friday before the swim meet and the divers performed very well, with senior Clair Gordon qualifying for state.
Senior Cora Dietrich thought the meet went well but acknowledges how there is plenty of room for improvement.
“I am excited to work on getting stronger in the weight room and focusing on the small details before the next meet,” Dietrich said.
The Warriors have been working extremely hard the past couple weeks in practice to improve their times and stamina. Sophomore Jax Miner thinks this had an effect on how their meets went this past week.
“The past few weeks have been tough, I think part of the reason we didn’t win Burke is that we were all pretty drained,” Miner said.
Along with Minor, Dietrich and many others on the swim team thought that having a draining week affected their times.
“We have been training pretty hard over the past three weeks, and so I definitely was pretty tired and my event times reflected that,” Dietrich said.
Being this early in the season for the Warriors, they are at a great starting point. Having won the past two state championships there is a lot of pressure on the team to beat a lot of schools and perform their best at all times.
“I made all of my times or got pretty close to them at the meet, so it’s a solid start to the season,” Miner said.
Taking the initiative to get better, Dietrich has made a list of things to focus on to get better in the water. Miner also has some things to work on for the rest of the season especially before the next meet.
“I personally need to just get my stamina up so I can keep my tempo up for longer events,” Minor said.
The Warriors next swim meet is Tuesday December 17th against the Millard West Wildcats.
