Seeing Double: Nilius twins help soccer team

With spring sports starting up, the Westside soccer season began last Thursday. Westside girls soccer has two key players this year, who contribute a lot to the team, and they are twins. Rebecca and Lizzie Nilius are juniors at Westside high school and have been playing soccer forever. The girls soccer team made it to the state semi-finals last year and the twins were an earned all-state honorable mention.

Rebecca is super excited for the season to start and can’t wait to play and build relationships with their teammates.

“I’m most excited for playing with my team and building that bond again,” Rebecca said.

Her twin Lizzie is excited about the talent Westside has this season and believes it will be the key to success.

“I’m most excited about the amount of potential our team has this year and hope that it can lead to many wins this season,” Lizzie said.

The Warriors have many tough opponents this year like Marian, Gretna and many of the Lincoln teams. Rebecca thinks the key to success to beat these teams and others throughout the season is for the team to have good chemistry.

“I think to make it to state we all just need to work hard and be there for each other on and off the field,” Rebecca said.

Just like her twin, Lizzie thinks the key to success is having a great relationship with her teammates, so they can play together as one and not individually.

“I think to make it to state our team needs to build our relationship and create a strong bond within the team,” Lizzie said. “And although the many skillful players we have on the team help, I think a strong relationship as a team is a big key to success.”

Both of the twins think they have an advantage playing on the field together, when they are getting along. But also don’t have as much of an advantage when they aren’t getting along.

“I think we can have an advantage if we’re getting along, but sometimes we end up fighting. It can sometimes be for the worse,” Rebecca said.

“I think playing with my twin has some benefits because we are close and play similar so we work well off of each other, but also just playing a sport with your sibling can be annoying at times but for the most part it’s good,” Lizzie said.
