Boys soccer to face Gretna in District Championship final
May 3, 2023
The Westside Warriors boys soccer team faces the defending champions Gretna High School in the finals of the A-2 District Championship.
It’s not often you see a rematch of the State Finals in the district tournament, so this game is definitely going to be a talent stacked one. The warriors fell short last year and are looking for redemption, Junior midfielder Coehen Rusin talked about the mentality going into this rematch.
“Last year was obviously a tough one and it’s been talked about a lot,” Rusin said. “But it’s just motivation to get our revenge and keep them from going to state.”
Rusin also spoke about what he and the team are expecting heading into this tough matchup.
“It’ll be a tough game and we’re gonna have to play some of the best soccer we’ve played all year,” Rusin said. “But we definitely can do it and are excited we have them in the district final.”
Rusin also talked about what he thinks will be the difference between the team that will be the separating factor.
“The difference today is we want it more,” Rusin said. “They have obviously beaten us up the past few games and everytime we hope things change but this time it really feels different with how everyone is treating the game and how motivated we are to win this game.”
The Warriors will take on the Dragons Thursday at 7 p.m. at Gretna High School in the A-2 district finals where they will try to upset the returning state champs on their home turf.
