Westside hires Andrew Wehrli as new head volleyball coach
March 3, 2023
The Westside Community Schools announced the hiring of a new volleyball head coach Andrew Wehrli on Friday, Feb. 17.
Coach Wehril is a familiar face on the volleyball scene. Wehrli coached at the college level, before coming into the high school games.
“I spent a lot of my time in college coaching at a small Division three school named Grace University, where we won the 2006 national championship,” Wehrli said.
Before coming to Westside, Wehrli had success at many other high schools which helped boost his coaching career. Wehrli was the head coach at Duchesne Academy from 2015-2021 leading the Cardinals to the Class B State tournament six times. He was the head coach at Fremont last season as the Tigers went 21-10.
“I coached at Marian and Skutt and was the head coach at Duchesne and then I went to frame up for a year and then this job opened and it was a great opportunity for our family,” Wehrli said.
Wehril started his career as a strength coach and as a bus driver.
“I also drove the bus for the team before,” Wehrli said. “I also helped with strength and conditioning and was the assistant coach that year.”
After some time, the assistant coach was pregnant and had to take some time off and that’s when Wehrli started his 20-year coaching career.
“The assistant coach was pregnant and she ended up on bedrest,” Wehrli said. “Then I got kind of pulled into being the assistant coach of the team when she was out and it’s kind of where I got in. I fell in love with the sport. I mean, it’s a great team sport in terms of it just requires everybody to do their job at such a high level to be great at it.”
Wehril has a very simple goal for when he comes to Westside and what he wants to accomplish.
“It’s pretty simple. I want to win some state championships and from what I’ve gathered, I think every sport at Westside has won a state championship except for volleyball,” he said.
Wehrli replaces Korrine Bowers, who coached the Warriors for the past five years. Westside will return eight players from the 2022 Westside volleyball team that set a school record with a 30-9 record and finished as the state runner-up. Wehrli will come to Westside at the start of next school year, where he will start his inaugural season with the Warriors.
