Westside’s Mikey Myers wins 160-pound state title
February 22, 2023
The Westside boys wrestling team headed into the State Championships with eight qualifiers. They went into the tournament with confidence and great expectations. The Warriors had four wrestlers make the podium and one state champion in Mikey Myers.
Myers shared what he expected of himself going into his last match that was going to decide whether he claimed the state title or not.
“My expectation going into the match was I had to leave it all on the mat no matter what, knowing this was going to be my last ever school match,” Myers said.
Myers headed into his last state tournament and expressed his thoughts about how the experience was after winning the 160-pound title.
“It feels great man, I have worked my entire life for this, I still can’t believe it,” Myers said.
There were 12 seconds left to go in the third period and with the score tied 7-7, Myers escaped and got up to win the 160-pound title. Myers expressed what he was feeling and what was going through his head during those final 12 seconds.
“The last 12 seconds were crazy, I knew if I got out I would win so I gave it everything I had and left it all on the mat to beat this guy. I am so proud of myself for the work I put in everyday at practice,” Myers said.
Westside head coach Michael Jernigan also shared his thoughts about how he felt when Myers escaped and stood up the last 12 seconds of the match.
“It wasn’t so much the escape that Mikey scored, it was the penalty point that gave us the chance to win in the final few seconds,” Jernigan said. “When the whistle blew for the penalty, I knew we were winning the match, no one can hold Mikey Myers down when big things are on the line.”
Myers finished his senior season with a 48-4 record on the mat and a gold medal.
