Westside wrestlers compete at Dan Gable Donnybroook national tournament

December 6, 2022

Sophomore Zoey Barber took home first place at 135 pounds

The Westside girls wrestling team competed at the Dan Gable Donnybrook tournament in Coralville, Iowa on Saturday, Dec. 3.  The Warriors were able to get three of their wrestlers on the podium at one of the hardest high school tournaments in the midwest.

Westside sophomore Zoey Barber placed second in the tournament, and she explained her thoughts on the weekend

“I thought I did good, I wasn’t happy that I got second but I was proud of myself because the girl I went up against was very good and I worked my butt off to make it to the finals,” Barber said.

Westside head coach Bob Mulligan also spoke about Barber’s performance at the tournament.

Zoey’s performance was unbelievable,” Mulligan said. “She was locked in from the start and it showed in her results. She pinned the 23rd nationally ranked Alexis Ross of Fort Dodge in the semifinals and wrestled fifth nationally ranked and Iowa commit Lilly Luft from Charles extremely tough before losing to her in the finals.”

Barber also talked about the team’s support and performance at the tournament.

“The team’s performance was great,” Barber said. “Macy and Piper placing was really good and we just had a great time”

The next tournament for the Westside girls wrestling team will be against 20 other teams at the Mid-America Center, for the Council Bluffs Classic on Saturday, Dec. 10.
