Westside sports editors predict semi-finals
#1 Westside (10-1) vs. #4 Grand Island (9-2)
Jordan’s Pick: Westside
The Warriors got off to a slow start in the quarterfinals against Lincoln Southwest, but never looked back after halftime. Westside quarterback Anthony Rezac accounted for five touchdowns, three of which on the ground, as the Warriors advanced to the semi-finals. Grand Island also got off to a slow start, as the Islanders found themselves down by ten points at the end of the first quarter against Millard South. The Islanders would go on to score 28 unanswered points. The Warriors defeated the Islanders 37-13 on September 2nd. To me, this is a great team against a good team. Give me the Warriors to punch their ticket to Memorial.
#2 Gretna (11-0) vs. #6 Creighton Prep (8-3)
Jordan’s Pick: Creighton Prep
The Dragons escaped an upset against Bellevue West with a 35-23 victory. Creighton Prep shocked the number three seed Elkhorn South 10-3. These two teams faced off in Gretna on September 9th, and it was the Dragons who came out on top of the Junior Jays in a defensive battle 16-13. But the Dragons had no answer for Charmar Brown, who ran wild for 214 yards and scored two touchdowns. I’m taking the Junior Jays to keep the upset train rolling, and meet their rivals in
#1 Westside (10-1) vs. #4 Grand Island (9-2)
Grace’s pick: Westside
Both of these teams have come out to play during the first few weeks of the playoffs. Grand Island came in last week beating Millard South 28-10 which no one really expected. Westside came in last week struggling in the first half against Lincoln Southwest, but they turned the tables beating them 42-28. Westside will continue to shine under quarterback Anthony Rezac who averages 88.5 rushing yards per game. Westside will take the win and once again return back to Memorial Stadium.
#2 Gretna (11-0) vs. #6 Creighton Prep (8-3)
Grace’s pick: Creighton Prep
Both Gretna and Creighton Prep have come into the playoffs strong, fighting for their shot at Memorial Stadium. But the Junior Jays came into play during their playoff run by beating undefeated Elkhorn South 10-3 last week, proving that they are here to play. Gretna and the Junior Jays have seen each other in the regular season with Gretna only winning by three points.
