Westside football ready to open playoffs
October 27, 2022
The Westside football team is fresh off of a dominating 63-7 victory against Lincoln Northeast on Friday, Oct.21 . The Warriors captured the number one overall seed with a record of 8-1 heading into state playoffs.
“Regardless of our seed we can’t take any opponent for granted,” junior tight end Trevor Spady said. “Any team can come out and win any night.”
Westside is hosting Papillion-LaVista tonight for their playoff opener. The Monarchs are the 16th seed with a 4-5 record. Papio is led by Payton Prestito, who has rushed for 1,069 yards. As the top seed, it’s always tempting to look past your current round and speculate.
“The most important game is the one we have that week,” Spady said.
After allowing 34 points to a solid Millard South squad, Westside’s defense bounced back in a major way against the Rockets, allowing just one score last week. Westside junior linebacker Beau Ryan intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown against Lincoln Northeast.
“As a defense we just have to hit them harder for longer and play fast,” Ryan said. “If we keep playing how we have been we will do just fine.”
The Warriors want to avoid a slow start, especially in the state playoffs.. Stepping on the gas and never picking their foot up is the standard for this Westside team.
“We need to make sure we play all four quarters,” Spady said. “If we get out and run from the jump, I think we’re in a good spot.”
The Warriors look to extend their season another week tonight at Phelps Field against the Monarchs.
