Westside’s varsity football team continued their 17-game winning streak, as they beat the Grand Island Islanders 41-7 on Friday, Sept. 24.

The Warriors switched things up this past week as sophomore quarterback Anthony Rezac took over in the second quarter over senior Kolby Brown. Rezac threw for 124 yards and two touchdowns. For him, the confidence that the rest of the offense had in his ability helped him feel more comfortable.

“I attribute the success to a lot of things. Obviously the O-line for giving me time back there, the receivers for getting open and making great catches,” Rezac said. “The play calling was great and because of our success by our running backs, it opened a lot of things up for me passing and running myself.”

The Warrior defense looked outstanding once again only allowing 253 total yards and forcing three turnovers. All three forced turnovers came from interceptions from the Warriors’ secondary Dom Rezac, Teddy Rezac, and Caleb Benning. Assistant coach Wade Halverson thinks the secondary stepped up to help the Warriors get the win.

“I think we did pretty well,” said Halverson. “Turnovers were huge, and I feel like we’re getting better with our communication.”

The Warriors are working toward another state championship run. Anthony Rezac expressed his mentality and what he’s focusing on for the rest of the season.

“My mentality is being the starter and helping lead us to the state championship,” Anthony Rezac said.   If the coaches decide to keep me on the bench then I’ll be fine with that as long as it’s best for the team, but I’ll stay ready and prepare like the starter”

The Warriors will continue their season this Friday, Oct. 1 against the Millard North Mustangs at Buell Stadium.
