The varsity girls soccer team competed in metros this past week. Coming into the tournament, the Warriors had a record of two wins and five losses. 

The Warriors competed in the metro tournament as a #12 seed, and they were first matched up against #4 seed Marian. The Warriors started off the tournament right with a huge 2-1 upset win. Junior Lauren Gieselman helped contribute to the win with a goal. 

“After beating Marian I felt really proud. We finally got the results we deserved and had worked for, and it was an even bigger accomplishment that it was against our rivals,” Gieselman said. “We proved that we were a team that’s better than our record shows and would compete against any matchup thrown at us.”

Gieselman said that as a team, they have continued to grow and mature throughout the season.

“I think we know what we’re capable of now and will continue to push that expectation every game,” Gieselman said. 

First year head Coach Christopher Dunford agrees with Gieselman in regards to the growth of the team.

“Anyone that’s watched us since the Lincoln East game has seen a more organized team that’s found an identity,” Dunford said. 

After beating Marian, however, the Warriors lost to Millard North in the quarterfinals. Coming off of a 2-1 home win over them a week prior, the Warriors lost 1-2 in overtime. Dunford said he was disappointed with the outcome. 

“I thought we actually played better than when we beat Millard North the week earlier and I’m proud of pushing a good Millard North team so close,” Dunford said. 

Senior Ellie Tempero said that the win against Marin was incredible, and everyone on the team is falling into their roles. 

“There is a ton of talent, and we are finally finding where everyone fits in best. The team is very young and each game brings more experience,” Tempero said. “I believe our culture is growing every day, and with that a winning mentality. I see improvements from each game that we can continue to build on.”

The girls team is back in action on April 22nd, in a home matchup against Papillion La-Vista South at 7:00 p.m.
