Series Review (With Spoilers): WandaVision: Season 1, Episode 3
“WandaVision: Episode 3 – Now in Color” was written by Megan McDonnell and directed by Matt Shakman. Venturing into a new era, the 1970s – based on “The Brady Bunch” – Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) prepare for their children’s arrival.
Comic book movies aren’t exactly known for their great romance subplot storylines, but it recently hit me that “WandaVision” has extreme potential to exhibit the greatest on-screen couple in a comic adaptation. For the Marvel Cinematic Universe in particular, there has only been one relationship that balances development and consistency. This is the relationship between Tony (Robert Downey Jr.) and Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow). The undeniably phenomenal performances and dynamic between Olsen and Bettany may change that.
We’re still at a point in the series where many viewers offer up their own theories and predictions for what’s to come. Unlike the previous episodes, we have some sort of story to work with. At the end of episode two, we find out that Wanda has mysteriously become pregnant and at the beginning of episode three, she’s already about four months along in a matter of hours. Fast forwarding through decades is meant to speed up the process of the kids aging. Throughout the episode, only one child is expected, although those who know the comics understand that is not the case. She of course has twins, Billy (aka Wiccan) and Tommy (Speed).
It’s now getting slightly easier to find out who is and who isn’t “real.” As we knew from last week, many organizations are being referenced; there’s yet another HYDRA commercial. This time it’s a soap ad for HYDRA Soak. I believe Agnes (Kathryn Hahn) is not the only one who knows what’s really going on, and that HYDRA has in fact infiltrated this reality. After Wanda has their kids, Vision steps outside and sees the neighbors, Agnes and Herb (David Payton), secretly conversing. Both of them clearly know that this world isn’t real, and it’s Wanda and Vision they’re trying to keep that secret from. Wanda may have created this world, however, I don’t believe she is fully in control of it. We get a closer look at Agnes’ brooch necklace, which looks to have three figures on it. Assuming the role of her husband, she once again refers to as “Ralph” isn’t Mephisto, I believe the third figure is Agnes’ husband, who will be revealed as Grim Reaper. A scythe is slightly visible and that would round out the trinity of villains in the show: Agnes or Agatha Harkness, Mephisto and Grim Reaper. Also, as it has been teased in behind the scenes footage, Simon Williams (aka Wonder Man) is a character directly associated with Grim Reaper, and he may show up eventually as well.
As for Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), who is chatting with Wanda after Billy and Tommy are born, Agnes and Herb both tell Vision that she doesn’t belong here. She has no family, no home, she somehow arrived, and that’s that. And as we see on her necklace, there’s a S.W.O.R.D. logo. Seeing that isn’t enough to make Wanda realize that she doesn’t belong here. However, Monica mentioning Pietro (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) being killed by Ultron (James Spader) is enough to get her blasted out of this reality near a platoon of S.W.O.R.D. vehicles. The final shot of Wanda is extremely eerie, and I don’t know what to expect anymore for the end of the show.
