Disappointed Westside Volleyball Team Competes in Busy Week
Beginning on Friday, October 18th, Westside varsity volleyball hosted a two day tournament. Westside played against highly ranked teams Papillion La-Vista, Marian, and Bellevue West. The Warriors struggled to stay on top, ending the day with a 0-3 game loss against all teams.
Head coach Korrine Bowers said how she feels after the first day of the tournament.
“This is hard because we’re better than that.We did not control our side for a majority of the day. But you know that’s what happens when you play kids that play club all year round and have been doing this since they were wee tall,” Bowers said. “So, you know you’re playing the best of the best. My kids have to open up to that and step up to the challenge. Regardless if we win or lose, I want them to be able to go home, look in the mirror every night and say ‘I gave everything I [could]`. If everyone can say that, then the team should be proud, but we did not do that tonight.
Senior libero, Marissa Koch, explains her perspective of where the team went wrong.
“I feel over all we played pretty good but we need to step up with the communication and [start] playing together as a team instead of just as individuals. Overall, we could’ve won all those games but we need to just step it up,” Koch said.
Saturday October 19th, day two of the invitational, Westside ended up with another winless day. Coach Bowers, already disappointed with the teams previous matches, had little say about the rest.
“Honestly, I don’t have anything to say about Saturday. I’m disappointed that the girls showed up already defeated. Not the true colors we have showed all year prior to Samantha Laird getting hurt. I hope to have her back by next Tuesday for Districts so we can have her fire power and intensity, which we have lacked. I hope we can build some momentum going into next year,” Bowers said.
Monday, October 21st the varsity volleyball team would go onto play Papio South at the Ralston Arena, where they would eventually lose. Westside faced off and won against Omaha North on October 22nd. District matches are to be determined.
