Movie Review: Travis Scott’s Look Mom I Can Fly
On August 28, 2019, Netflix released a documentary on the musician Travis Scott and his life entitled Look Mom I Can Fly. The documentary follows Scott through his childhood up to the creation of his latest album, Astroworld. Featuring Scott’s wife, Kylie Jenner, and another rapper who collaborated with Scott on the album, Don Toliver, in my opinion the film does a great job of giving a ‘behind-the-scenes’ look into Scott’s life.
One of my favorite aspects of the film is that it takes the viewer into the life of Scott and his family. In my opinion, the film dives deep into the childhood of Scott and shows you the raw talent, rap, and freestyle skills that he had at a young age. I also enjoyed seeing Scott’s home, since it was where his career was born. A scene I really liked in the film was where they included a younger Travis Scott seeing Astroworld (the Six Flags theme park from which his album was inspired). As someone who frequently listens to his music, it was really cool to see how far back some of Travis Scott’s ideas were born.
Another part of the film that I really enjoyed was when it takes you to the recording and evolution of Scott’s music from his 2014 album, Days Before Rodeo, to his latest album, Astroworld. I thought that it was really cool to see Scott tinkering with different beats, rhythms, and sounds that if released, would have completely changed the rhythm, beat, and feel of some of his most popular songs. It was also cool to see the evolution of Scott’s concerts. In my opinion, it was always clear that Scott’s concerts were always creative, but it amazed me to see how each tour was crazier than the last.
There was not much to complain about from my perspective on this film. The only thing that I disliked was the length of the film. I thought that it was too short. I would have loved another hour or so to listen to Scott’s music and dive deeper into his life and career.
Overall, I would recommend Look Mom I Can Fly to anyone who is a fan of Travis Scott’s music, as the film is a tribute to some of his best work. I can’t speak for everyone, but as a big fan of Scott myself, I can say that I really enjoyed the film.
