Nine Run Third Lifts Warriors Over Eagles

It’s comeback season.

That’s the mantra that the Westside varsity softball team, which hasn’t earned a state tournament bid since 2011, is living by as the 2019 season gets underway. They want to come back and make a name for themselves, and they began the road to Hastings with an 11-0 victory over Omaha Central on Thursday. Junior Dayton Kell said it was a good start.

“My past two years, we weren’t very good,” Kell said. “But we’re going to come back now.”

In the 11-0 effort, the Warriors piled on nine runs in the bottom of the third inning to put them over the four inning run rule limit. Kell contributed with a two-run home run to right field in that inning. She said it was vital to start off on a good note.

“It’s good,” Kell said. “We have to make a statement.”

Senior pitcher Salem Liebenthal (1-0) picked up her first win of the year with five strikeouts.
Westside will return to action on Friday, August 23, 2019 at Gross Catholic High School for their first weekend tournament of the year.
