Westside Tops Mustangs, Moves on to Don Kraft Final

The Westside baseball team was two runs from their 14th victory of the season on Monday night when they welcomed Millard North to Warrior Field. Then, Drake Donahoe drove in two insurance runs to give the Mustangs a 7-4 lead.

So, when the Warriors were slated for a rematch with Donohoe’s squad five days later in the semifinals of the Don Kraft Invitational, head coach Bob Greco gave senior ace Tucker Hagan the ball. The starter said that he felt as though the 6-4 win, which included a two-run home run from Jack Ricketts, wasn’t his best showing, but he still got it done for his team.

“I didn’t have my best stuff out there,” Hagan said. “I just did what I had to do to get it done.”

Despite the early shot from Ricketts, Hagan, who would end up striking out four in six innings of work by the end of the night, finished with his fifth win of the season. He was backed by five hits from the Westside offense, including a two-RBI double from senior Joe Stegman that gave the Warriors the lead.

The win advanced Westside to the championship game of the Don Kraft Invitational, which will be held at Millard South on Saturday, April 26 at 5:30 p.m. Hagan said that the late season wins are a good boost to the wild card standings down the stretch.

“It all adds up to the wild card,” Hagan said. “The more wins we get, the better we’re off.”

Westside sat at 11th place in the wild card standings heading into Friday’s matchup.
