Boys Lacrosse Takes Down Papillion at Home
The Westside Varsity boys lacrosse team played a home match against Papillion at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, 2019. The Warriors scored four in the 1st quarter, three in the 2nd, three in the 3rd and topped off the 4th quarter with one last goal to seal the win, with the game ending 11-7. The lacrosse head coach Cory Damgaard said he feels proud of the team’s success.
“I think overall it was a team win, both offensively and defensively, goalie played lights out, the offense played lights out [and] overall I’m very happy with the guys,” Damgaard said.
Despite the team’s success, Coach Damgaard thinks there is still room for improvement.
“From a coach’s perspective, everything can be worked on [and] everything can be improved. Today there was a few penalties that got to us but the overall performance I couldn’t ask for much more,” Damgaard said.
While enjoying the win, Damgaard said he is ready for the rest of the season.
“Overall I’m proud of the boys, it’s all them, they earned it, and we’re gonna walk away and prepare for the rest of the season,” said Coach Damgaard.
Parent of Defender Quincy Hogan and lacrosse sponsor, Lenice Hogan, said she was was excited about the boys win.
“We played a really passionate, exciting game, and they fundamentally played very well. Interesting fact the [head] coach’s son played for the [Papillion] team. So, everyone was very excited and it was a nice win for us,” Hogan said.
Goalkeeper of the lacrosse team, senior Adam Fletcher, explained his team’s success.
“In the first half ,we were up 8-3, but Papillion came back and they really punched us in the face. We just stood our ground and fought back. It was a good game from both sides but, in the end, we played better,” Fletcher said.
Fletcher said he feels that this is the kickstart of the team’s journey to a state championship.
“Our junior attackman was injured at the beginning of the season and this is his first game [back]. He came and had a three-goal game. I think this is our spark to make it into the state tournament,” said Fletcher.
