Rugby Team Has Eyes on State Championship
As Westside’s rugby season kicks off, so do the rankings. Coming into the season according to Rugby Nebraska as the top team. After losing in the semi-finals last year the Warriors look to bring the first state title to the program. Senior Nathan Wooster said that they have worked to be able to do so.
“We have been working very hard to get to where we are. There’s a lot more we can do but as of right now we are making progress,” Wooster said.
As the seniors act as leaders, the underclassman follow. The Warriors have won their first out of three games including a win against former state champions Glenwood High School.
With a team full of multi-sport athletes, there is a lot of variety on the field according to senior Jerry Harwood.
“The athleticism the football players bring is great. There are a lot of guys that bring a tough mentality and help us win,” Harwood said.
Led by head coach Matt Bova, the team hopes to bring wins back to the program each week. Bova set up a game preseason to play against one of the nation’s top teams.
The Warriors will head down to Kansas City to face off against Saint Thomas Aquinas; the number five team in the nation at the moment according to FloRugby.
As many teams continue to improve, so do the Warriors. The team has continued to make practices worth their time according to Wooster.
The Warriors next game is Saturday, April 13, 2019 against nationally-ranked Saint Thomas Aquinas in Kansas City.
