Freshman Girl Makes History on Mat
She’s a champion.
Last night, an all-girls wrestling tournament was held in Nebraska City. Although Westside has been competing in tournaments of this kind all season, this one happened to have a bit more meaning. Freshman Alicia Gubalke became the first girl in Westside wrestling history to win an all-girls tournament. In a release statement, head coach Michael Jernigan said this was special.
“It’s not very often that a person can say that they made ‘history’,” Jernigan said.
A number of girls have been participating in the wrestling program at the junior varsity level and at all-girls tournaments, but they have never come out on top. That changed last night.
“Alicia is the first girl wrestler at Westside to win her weight class in a tournament,” Jernigan said. “Westside has had girls place in tournaments before, but never a champion!”
The wrestling team will head to Midland University for the Fremont Bergan Invite on Friday for their last event before winter break.
