Student’s Controversial Tweet Goes Viral

Following the Brett Kavanaugh trial that occurred from Sept. 27 through Sept. 28, senior Kjersti Swanson tweeted her opinion on the fear felt by falsely accused rapists compared to the fear felt in a woman’s everyday life.

“I was just trying to make a point,” Swanson said. “I didn’t expect this many people to be agreeing with me.”

The tweet was shared on Sept. 30 and stated “‘i’M AfRAid of GEttInG FaLsELy aCcUsED’ I’m afraid to walk anywhere alone. I’m afraid of going to my car late at night. I’m afraid of riding Übers alone. I’m afraid of getting too close to older men. Your fear of facing claims doesn’t compare to the fear girls feel just living.” Swanson said she tweeted it because she felt as if people were taking the results of the Kavanaugh trial out of proportion.

“I feel bad because a lot of women and a lot of survivors of sexual assault and sexual abuse don’t necessarily get their stories heard and when they do they are called a liar almost immediately,” Swanson said.

Swanson said there are a lot of negative responses such as death threats in her direct messages but the majority of responses are in support of her viewpoint.

“Most of the people who are angry or upset over the tweet are men or boys,” Swanson said. “There were a lot of people who came out in support [of the tweet] and who responded to it or dm’ed me personally telling me of their experiences and how they appreciate someone saying something.”

Swanson said she expected people, especially girls, to agree with her tweet because she feels as if what she said in the tweet is a shared experience for a lot of women. As for the impact of her tweet, Swanson said she doesn’t think there will be much of one.

“I think it goes to show that young people are ready to have a conversation about this,” Swanson said. “Young girls in particular are tired of the way things are going and feel disappointed especially with the outcomes of the trial and outcome of the election and they want change. [My tweet] should inspire conversation if nothing else.”

Swanson said she didn’t expect the tweet to go viral. As of now, Swanson’s tweet has 54,000 retweets and 155,000 likes and the numbers keep climbing.
