Freshman Wins Title, Golf Team Shines at Metro Championship
On the cold, wet and rainy morning of september 25, 2018 the Metro Conference Girls Golf Championship was held at Elmwood Park Golf Course. The Warriors came into the event with 3 second place finishes and multiple finishes inside the top 10.
“Like every golf team and coach we practice our chipping and putting, we hit the range and mix it up with playing the course,” coach Barry Glanzer said. “Some of the better players played this summer in a lot of the events that go on and so the better golfers are going to be putting in a lot of time over the summer.”
Glanzer said his goal is for the girls to qualify for state and, if they get there, since they have a lot of young players, they want to get the experience and play as well as they can.
“During the round, at one point towards the end, [Kaitlyn Hanna] started to hurry a little bit and got into a bit of rush and so I told her to just slow down and take her time,” Glanzer said. “Kaitlyn is such a great player and she works her heart out and is very coachable. She just keeps it in play and if she has a bad hole she keeps it in low numbers, and she does that as well as any player I have ever had at Westside.”
Hanna overcame a bogey-bogey start to shoot a 4-over-par score of 72, winning the tournament by one stroke. As a team, Westside shot a 337, earning themselves a 3rd place finish. Coach Glanzer said Freshman Claire Bonnett has really improved this season and has been shooting consistently in the 90s the past few tournaments, and she shot a 91 at the metros. Senior Lilly Fogland medeled and shot an 82, and Portia Lenczowski shot a 92. Mia Weisbach also competed and came away with a score of 96, but her round was omitted from the team score.
