Recap: Warriors Outclash Knights in First Home Game of the Season

The glimmering lights, a sea of red, and football are back for another go around at 87th and Pacific.

The Westside varsity football team beat Lincoln Southeast on Friday, September 7th. The final score was 29-14 and the game improved the Warriors to a 3-0 record.

The Warriors put their first points on the board in the first quarter when sophomore Cole Payton threw a touchdown pass to senior Joe Stegman making it 7-0 including the made PAT from junior kicker Jack Bush. The Warriors continued to roll in the quarter when the Knights muffed a punt resulting in a safety and sophomore Avante Dickerson had a long touchdown run making it 15-0 at the end of the first. In the 2nd quarter, Westside tacked on 6 more points when Stegman scored his second touchdown of the game. The Warriors owned a 22-0 lead at the half. Senior running back Same Parsonage gave credit to the offensive line for their big lead.

“It all happened because of our line, they dominated,” Parsonage said.

The third quarter started out wonderful when Dickerson ran in another touchdown for the Warriors, however things started getting less comfortable when the Knights scored 14 unanswered points making it 29-14 at the end of the third. The 4th quarter was all about defense as neither team put up any points in the final 12 minutes. Because of this, the Warriors were able to stand strong and get the win. Senior Loren Woita praised starting quarterback Cole Payton for his performance in the win.

“Cole Payton did amazing, no doubt,” Woita said. “He showed a lot of poise and good leadership.”

Westside will return to action at Phelps Field on Friday, September 14, 2018, at 7 p.m. against Gretna.
