Recap: Westside Skids By Bellevue East to Open Season

It’s what everyone has been waiting for all summer, football season. And now the Westside student body and community have finally been able to enjoy a football game for the first time since november. The Warriors started off the season on the night of Friday, August 24th. The team went on the road and defeated the Bellevue East Chieftains in a 52-0 shutout.

The game was a very notable one for sophomore starting quarterback Cole Payton as he led his team to a big score difference on his first varsity game. Teammate Brody Alvarez said he was content with the young quarterback’s performance.

“I am proud of our sophomore quarterback Cole Payton, stepping up and helping lead the team to victory.” Alvarez said.

The Warriors were on a roll in the first half as they led 31-0 at halftime. This scoring included a punt return touchdown by senior Joe Stegman. The third quarter was a bit slower as the offence was forced to punt on 4th and 10 on the first drive of the half. The team scored seven points in the 3rd quarter as a whole. However, the Warriors picked it up right when the fourth quarter began as they scored a touchdown with 11:27 left. The Warriors ended up passing the half century mark with a late touchdown that improved the score to 51-0 before junior Jack Bush made the PAT to make it 52-0 with only 4-41 left in the game.

Although the scoring was amazing for the Warriors the team also showed great defensive skill as they made the game a shutout. Junior Grant Tagge said he was pleased with the defensive performance in the game.

“Our defensive focus all summer has been TBL (tackle behind the line) and turnovers,” Tagge said. “We came out with an attitude of stopping the run and were really effective at that”.

The Warriors take the field again against Papillion-La Vista on August 31st at Foundations Field at Papillion-La Vista South.
