Photo Gallery/RECAP: Westside girls fall to #2 Marian, celebrate seniors
Fans of both Westside and Marian came out to a brisk Saturday morning matchup between their #6 ranked and #2 ranked girls soccer teams. This game had a massive meaning to it as both teams had to prove that they can compete with the best. #2 Marian came into the game with a 12-1 record, while #6 Westside was 9-2.
The Warriors were clearly fired up coming out of the gate, as there were multiple chances at scoring in the first 10 minutes. Finally, in the 11th minute, Wilson manages to get a head on a corner and knocks one into the net. However, 10 minutes later, Marian retaliated with a corner kick goal of their own. The game was dead still up to halftime, where the teams took a break at 1-1.
In the second half, Marian got the upper hand, as they scored 15 minutes in. The game looked to be over after that, as the Crusaders were playing great defense. However, in the 75th minute, Westside cracked them open on a corner yet again, with Wilson getting credit for the goal for her second of the day. The game was headed to ET tied up at 2-2.
In ET, fatigue showed up in both teams, and sloppy play ensued. No goals for either side going into the 2nd period of ET. The 2nd period looked similar to the first, as it was a dead still. The game was certain to go into a shootout. There was one last chance for Marian as they were granted a corner kick. They played it short, crossed it in, and got a foot on it to score with 20 seconds left in the game. That ended the game 3-2 Marian in ET.
Although no lose is ever thought of as good, there are many things that Westside can take away from this. The biggest thing is that they showed that they can do more than compete with the second best team in state, so who is to say that they can’t compete with any other team in state. This will hopefully give confidence to the Warriors going into districts and hopefully state. Overall, the student body can only hope that Westside will take more good from this tough loss than bad.
