Girls Soccer looks towards district tournament, rest of season
After their convincing 10-0 win against Bryan last Wednesday, the Westside Girls Soccer team now has a record of 9-2 on the season. Before they can focus their eyes on Morrison Stadium and a state title, the team has to get past a few obstacles that stand in their way. Girls soccer head coach Nathan Moseley said some of the team’s biggest challenges for the season are the rigorous schedule and the loss of last year’s seniors.
“The schedule is a challenge for sure,” Moseley said. “In the first three weeks, we played 12 games, which is a lot.”
With only two losses on the season, the Warriors have fared pretty well so far. Coach Moseley said he’s excited to try and continue that trend.
“Hopefully we can gel together as a team and keep finding success,” Moseley said.
Moseley said that the level of talent the team brings to the table is a large strength. But, along with that strength comes weaknesses.
“I think one of our biggest strengths is just playing ability,” Moseley said. “We have a lot of talent in each individual player all the way down to number 18. But, the challenge with that is it’s hard to get everybody a lot of minutes. So, people are fighting for positioning. Which is good, competition is good, but it can also create tension in the team. So, whether [the team] comes together or not really depends on that.”
Although the team only lost three seniors last year, their loss has been by felt by the team in more ways than one.
“So, there were three seniors on the team, and two starters in Emily [Torres] and Hannah [Bowes],” Moseley said. “Hannah was probably the more vocal leader of the two. Emily would just work really hard. So, from that standpoint we obviously miss their talent but they weren’t necessarily really vocal in directing stuff out there.”
Throughout any team’s season, there are things to improve from the first game to the last. One of the things Moseley said his team can improve on at this point in the season is positioning.
“We’re just still trying to figure out the best position for each person,” Moseley said. “The challenge is we have lots of people gone at different times throughout the season. So, we might find a good spot for somebody and then they’re gone for a week and we’re scrambling to find someone to fill that hole.”
The varsity Girls Soccer team takes on Marian Saturday, April 21th at 10:00 a.m. at Phelps Field.
