It’s that time of the year again! Cool nights have returned, haunted houses are all over town, and Vala’s Pumpkin Patch is open for the season. Whatever you like to do to get in the spirit of Halloween, the time has arrived. As for me, I love watching scary movies! There’s nothing better than watching a movie that’ll make your blood run cold and make you scared to turn the corner. Today I share with you some of my favorite scary movies of all time. You can find them all on either Netflix, Amazon, or whatever streaming device you use to watch movies. This list isn’t my favorite scary movies list. :

1. Halloween (1978) – If you’re watching any scary movies this month, you have to check out this classic horror phenomenon. Halloween follows Michael Myers, who one Halloween night killed his teenage sister and was sent to an asylum. Years later, he escapes and comes home to Haddonfield, Illinois to continue his deadly rampage. Jamie Lee Curtis leads the movie as a high school girl that becomes Michael’s main target. The music is eerie, the jump scares are on point, and Michael Myers is just overall a creepy guy. His mask is recognizable and his choices might creep you out of your seat. Whether it’d be covering up in a bedsheet to kill someone or standing off in the distance to give paranoia, Michael gives you scares that will make you scared to look the other way.
2. The Shining (1980) – Based off of the Stephen King novel, The Shining tells the story of Jack Torrance and his family spending their winter in a luxurious resort in upstate Colorado. While there, Jack suffers from cabin fever and turns evil, terrorizing his wife and son. Not only is this movie scary good, The Shining is also a well-made film directed by the great Stanley Kubrick. Jack Nicholson gives an unnerving performance as Jack, and the suspense is truly spine-tingling. I will warn you that this movie’s runtime is 2 hours and 23 minutes, which is pretty long for a horror movie. So if you’re up for the challenge, watch The Shining this Halloween!
3. It (2017) – I know this just came out and has been taking the cinema box office by storm, but you need to check out this movie while you still can. It is about a demonic clown named Pennywise that terrorizes the children of Derry, Maine. After abducting a little boy, the boy’s brother and his friends search for him and eventually come face-to-face with Pennywise. Like The Shining, It is another frightening and well-made Stephen King adaptation. The scares are unsuspecting, the suspense is on point, and there’s even some solid humor. Starring a cast of talented youngsters and a terrifyingly stellar performance by Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise, It is definitely worth seeing in theaters as soon as possible. So go see it if you haven’t yet, you do not want to miss the hottest movie of the season!
4. Psycho (1960) – You may know Psycho as that old horror movie with the famous shower scene and the iconic screeching violins. If you think that might be all Psycho can give, you are wrong my friend. The movie follows a young woman running from everyone in her life with stolen money. One stormy night, she comes across a secluded motel off the highway. When she meets the manager, he is a gentle, nice, awkward person…or so he claims. There is so much horror, suspense, and even some spot-on acting in this movie. Also, Alfred Hitchcock-who is praised to be one of the greatest directors that has ever lived-made this movie if you want to know any recognizable names that are attached to this film. Even if you don’t like this movie, you should also check out the TV show Bates Motel, which gives background to the manager prior to the events in Psycho.
5. The Babadook (2014) – This horror flick didn’t make waves in its home country of Australia, but it was a hit in North America and at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. The Babadook is about a widow raising her six year-old son who tells her that the monster from a mysterious children’s book has come alive in their home. While she keeps telling him that it’s not real and that it’s only a book things get crazy for the widow and she begins experiencing weird occurrences. It’s been awhile since I last saw The Babadook, but from what I remember it’s worth checking out this Halloween. It may seem ridiculous at first, but eventually the movie will get insane and turn into the frightfest you want it to be. You can trust me on that!
