RECAP: Seniors battle juniors at Powderpuff
September 13, 2017
This year’s annual Powderpuff football game ended in a 12-0 win for the senior class. Throughout the game, Westside’s DECA Chapter presented their project “Highway to Harvey,” and accepted donations for victims of Hurricane Harvey in front of the stadium. Many news and radio stations broadcasted the event, and it ended up being a huge success in regards to donations.
In the first quarter, on the seniors’ first offensive play of the game, senior Lauren Fehr threw a 35 yard pass to senior Olivia Washburn for a touchdown, bringing the seniors up 6-0 over the juniors.
“I was really excited to come back and play this year, since we were all really disappointed with last year’s turnout,” Fehr said. “To come out in the first offensive play of the game and throw the ball all the way to the end zone was surreal. At that point, I knew the game was over for the juniors.”
The juniors, led by quarterback Ryley Nolin, held the ball on offense for most of the second quarter. Unable to put any points on the board, the first half ended with a 6-0 score.
“It was a really cool experience and super fun to play with and against friends,” Nolin said. “Watch out sophomores, don’t sleep on us next year.”
The halftime show, presented by the junior and senior dance teams, was nothing short of entertaining. Senior dance team member Nick Lamb says he “had a great time getting that senior sweep!”
“People doubted us, but we were like, ‘Are you silly?'” Lamb said. “It turned out great. I’m glad I got the opportunity to dance with my brothers one last time.”
The third quarter began, and senior Jaylen Knight rushed into the end zone for another touchdown for the seniors, bringing the score to 12-0. With no other points scored in the game, the seniors officially finished their “Senior Sweep” at Phelps Field.
“Powderpuff has been an amazing experience these past two years,” Fehr said. “I’m sad it all had to come to an end, but I am glad the senior girls came out with the win!”
