Hockey team has high hopes for the season
November 14, 2016
With 6 seniors having graduated, and few of the athletes having prepared in the off-season, it may seem as though the Westside hockey team is going to have an unsuccessful year. However, junior Mike Hickey and senior Owen Morrow are confident that that will not be the case.
“We have 12 skaters and 2 goalies this year,” Hickey said. “It’s a rebuilding year, so we won’t do as well as we could, but we will still win state.”
The team practices once a week and has games on Wednesdays and Sundays. During practices they focus on hitting drills, passing drills and team building.
“A lot of these guys are freshman and sophomores, brand new to the team,” Morrow said. “Practices are half redeveloping hockey skills and half making everybody feel welcome.”
Despite having young team, the returners are confident that the new players will develop their skills throughout this season of rebuilding.
“We have a young team, but if people can get their head screwed on straight I think there is definitely a chance of winning state,” Morrow said.
Hockey games are not a school sanctioned sport so they are free to attend. In order for the team to achieve their goal to win state, the team needs all the student support they can get! Check out the team on Wednesdays and Sundays.
